Peterborough · G2 & G road test

Road test preparation for the Peterborough DriveTest centre

Peterborough asks for something Durham students often have not practised: driving on a gradient. The city sits on genuinely rolling terrain and is split by the Otonabee River, so hill starts, hill parking and controlled descents are a real part of the picture rather than a textbook exercise.

Testing somewhere else?

DriveTest assigns your centre when you book the test. Oshawa and Port Union share one price list; Peterborough and Lindsay share the out-of-town service.

Not sure which option is right for you?

Tell us your licence stage and where you are in Durham Region, and we will point you at the option that actually fits — not the biggest one.

The driving area

What the roads around Peterborough ask of you

Examiners apply the same standard at every centre. What changes is the road environment — and that determines what is worth practising.

  • Hills and gradients

Peterborough is not flat. Hill starts without rolling back, parking on a slope with wheels turned correctly, and controlling speed on a descent all come up in a way they simply do not in most of Durham.

  • River crossings and bridge approaches

The Otonabee splits the city, so routes cross it. Bridge approaches often bring a lane change and a speed change close together, which needs planning rather than reaction.

  • A compact older core

Downtown streets are narrower, with on-street parking and pedestrian activity. Positioning matters, and there is less room to correct an error.

  • Quick transitions to open road

The city gives way to open county roads quickly, so a route can move from town driving to higher-speed rural conditions without much warning.

What we drill

Skills this area's roads weight heavily

  • Hill starts with no rearward roll
  • Hill parking with wheels turned the correct way
  • Speed control on descents without riding the brake
  • Lane changes on bridge and river-crossing approaches
  • Positioning on narrower downtown streets

Test day

Before you leave the house

  • Your licence, and anything else your DriveTest appointment confirmation asks for
  • A roadworthy, insured vehicle that meets DriveTest's requirements
  • Working signals, brake lights, horn, wipers and washer fluid
  • A clear windscreen and mirrors, and nothing loose in the cabin
  • Arrive early enough that parking and check-in are not part of the stress
  • Confirm requirements on your own booking confirmation, as they can change

DriveTest sets its own requirements and they can change. Your appointment confirmation is the authority, not this page.

FAQ

Peterborough road test questions

  • Why would I test in Peterborough instead of Oshawa?

Usually availability — appointment slots can open up sooner at one centre than another. If you take a Peterborough slot, plan for the hill work, because it is the main difference.

  • Do you travel to Peterborough for preparation?

Get in touch before you commit to a Peterborough slot and we will tell you honestly what we can cover and where the sessions would run. Gradient practice is the part worth planning for.

  • I have never done a hill start. Is that a problem?

It is very common for Durham learners, and it is the first thing we would work on for a Peterborough test. It is a technique, not a talent — it takes a session or two.
