Just starting out? Here's how driving in Ontario actually works
The first stage confuses almost everyone, largely because several different organisations are involved. This page lays out the sequence plainly, including the parts that have nothing to do with us.
Worth being clear about
We teach driving. We don't issue licences.
Your G1, the knowledge test and your road tests all go through DriveTest and ServiceOntario. We are the part in the middle: the instruction that gets you ready for them.

The sequence
Four steps, and only two of them involve us
Knowing which is which saves a lot of wasted phone calls.
- 01
Get your G1
DriveTestYou apply and sit the written knowledge test at a DriveTest centre — rules of the road and traffic signs, plus a vision screening. This part is between you and DriveTest; we are not involved, and no driving school can sit it for you or speed it up.

Start learning to drive
We helpOnce you hold a G1 you can drive with a fully licensed instructor, or with a qualified accompanying driver under the G1 conditions. This is where we come in — your first lessons, cockpit drill and quiet residential streets.

Build real road experience
We helpLessons move outward as you settle: four-way stops, multi-lane arterials, roundabouts and busier conditions. Alongside them you build supervised practice hours, which is where most of the improvement actually happens.

Take your G2 road test
DriveTestWhen you are eligible and genuinely ready, you book the G2 road test through DriveTest. We will help you judge readiness honestly and prepare on the road types around your centre — but the booking and the result are theirs, not ours.
Holding a G1
What the licence in your hand actually lets you do
The G1 is a learner stage with real conditions attached. Ontario publishes the current rules — treat those as the authority, not this page.
You must drive with someone qualified beside you
A G1 driver cannot drive alone. You need a licensed instructor or an accompanying driver who meets Ontario's requirements in the front passenger seat.
There are restrictions on when and where
Ontario places conditions on G1 drivers — including alcohol, seatbelts for every occupant, and limits on certain roads and times. Check the current rules on the official Ontario licensing pages, as they are the authority and they do change.
Your practice hours are not wasted time
Every supervised hour counts toward the driver you become. We give you a written brief after each lesson so those hours build on the instruction rather than drifting.

Online theory, one-to-one in-car training and structured Home Link practice as one program. Suits students who want a clear syllabus and visible progress rather than booking lessons ad hoc, and it is the route that carries the recognised course certificate.
About the BDE course - LESSONS
Individual lessons, booked as you need them
Useful if you already have a parent or friend able to supervise plenty of practice, and you want professional instruction for the parts that are not working. Flexible, and no fixed course length.

New driver questions
If a question here is really about licensing rather than lessons, we have pointed you at whoever actually decides.
Do you issue G1 licences or run the knowledge test?
No. The G1 knowledge test and the licence itself come from DriveTest and ServiceOntario. We are a driving school — we teach you to drive once you hold a G1. Anyone telling you they can issue or fast-track a licence is not being straight with you.
I don't have my G1 yet. Is there anything I can do with you now?
Get in touch and we will talk through the sequence so you are not guessing. In-car instruction has to wait until your G1 is in hand, but knowing what comes next — and roughly what it costs — is worth having before you sit the test.
Where do I take the knowledge test?
At a DriveTest centre. Check their official site for locations, what to bring, current fees and whether you need an appointment — those details are theirs and they change.
How soon after my G1 can I start lessons?
Straight away. Plenty of students book their first lesson within days of passing the knowledge test, which is a good time to start — the rules are still fresh.
Should I do the full BDE course or just book lessons?
It depends on how much supervised practice you can get and how structured you want it. The BDE course is a complete program with online, in-car and Home Link work; individual lessons are more flexible. The Packages page lays both out side by side.
I'm nervous about driving at all. Is that a problem?
It is one of the most common things we hear, and it is not a problem. First lessons start on quiet residential streets at whatever pace suits you, in a dual-control training vehicle so your instructor can step in.
